#FERMOBPEOPLE
Season 3
A breath of fresh air!

A secret life is a happy life…

Ideally one lived in the midst of a forest! On that front, the Brisset Estate ticks all the boxes, since it’s completely hidden from view, only appearing as you round the final corner. The Bertrand family invited us into their impressive home, a recent purchase, for the 2021 Album shoot.
And what a warm welcome we received from retired combat helicopter pilot Jean-Charles and emergency doctor Pascale, who met in the army, and their two children Pierre and Antoine, both 11 years old.
“The experience was fun from start to finish,” says J-C.

When you laid eyes on the Brisset Estate, it was love at first sight!

P : Absolutely! When Jean-Charles retired from his job as an army helicopter pilot in 2018, it was out chance to make the move we’d always dreamed of – to leave Alsace and head to sunnier climes. He spotted the house on the “Maisons Atypiques” website. It’s only 2 km from the centre of Montélimar, but it’s so peaceful it’s like living out in the countryside.

JC: I fell madly in love with the place the first time I set foot inside!

The house is known locally for its interesting past. Can you tell us more?

JC : When they were building the place back in the late 18th century, they had to dig into the hillside. The workers uncovered a vast Neolithic burial site measuring 100 by 30 metres. The chamber has since been converted into a wine cellar. It’s bigger than the Drôme Provençale and Vaucluse cellars! We access it from the lounge via a glazed door, so we can admire it all day long. During the Second World War, the house served as the headquarters of the Wehrmacht. You can still see the scars left by American bullets in the render. There’s also a Roman stone tablet in the grounds dating from 400 A.D. We’ve had historians come along to see it!

It’s the dream family home! The boys play in the forest. There’s a huge dormitory, a giant games room, and a pond with fish and frogs!

Describe this distinctive house for us!

The huge terrace overlooks the valley. When you stand there, you feel like you’re floating above the treetops. It’s a Provençal country house that was restored in the 1920s by a doctor from Lyon. It’s since passed through the hands of many families. The owners before us modernised the place. And I’ve spent the last 18 months doing my own renovations, including laying IPE decking around the spring-water pool, which used to be a fish pond. I’ve also kitted out the garage, which now houses my cars and motorbikes. I’ve always been a handy mechanic, and I love restoring vehicles to their former glory. My old Land Rover was definitely popular with the Fermob team!

Speaking of Fermob, you took part in the casting call for the 2021 Album. What prompted you to apply?

P : We picked up a copy of the Album last year from our favourite interior design store in Montélimar. I remarked, half-joking, that it sounded like a fun thing to do. Jean-Charles and the boys took me at my word and submitted an application along with some photos. The rest is history!

How did the shoot go?

The children couldn’t have been more excited. They thought they were going to be famous! The team spent four days with us. It was a great experience. It’s fascinating to see everything that goes on behind the camera. When you’re in front of the lens, you have no idea just how much work goes into one photo!

You love living around here. Can you share some of your favourite places with our Fermobpeople community?

It’s ideally situated, just 1 hour 30 from Lyon and 1 hour 40 from Marseille! There are some really pretty villages nearby, like Grignan, Saint-Restitut, La Garde-Adhémar and Suze-la-Rousse. And Montélimar is a tranquil provincial town. It’s a lovely place to live.

Collection FERMOBXMELLEMIMIJOLIE
Limited edition

FERMOB x MELLEMIMIJOLIE: A lush collection in a strictly limited edition

Take two nature-lovers: one a brand, the other a designer. Put them together and what do you get? A lush collection that’s bang on trend at a time when greenery is becoming a staple feature of indoor spaces. After all, who among us doesn’t have a plant or two in the corner of our lounge? What’s more, leaves, fruits and flowers are the must-have decorative craze of the moment, appearing on fixtures, fittings and accessories of every type – from sofas and wallpaper to cushions and ornaments. It’s a trend that’s putting us back in touch with nature and bringing beauty and gentle relaxation to our everyday lives. That’s why the limited-edition Fermob x Mellemimijolie collection couldn’t be more apt. Get a sneak preview of the story behind it!

Fermob opened my eyes to a new avenue of creativity, letting me tell a story – the story of our return to nature

Fermob and collabs

At Fermob, the brand known for its expertise in furniture-making, we simply love working with like-minded artists from all walks of life – and using our industrial know-how to turn creative ideas into reality. Because being open-minded to other design influences, and harnessing the mutually enriching power of collaboration, is an immensely rewarding experience. First, we teamed up with Koralie, who successfully revisited our famous Balad lamp. This time around, we invited textile and graphic designer Mellemimijolie – real name Sandrine Djellil – to develop a limited edition on the theme of winter gardens to supplement the brand’s furniture, lighting and accessory collections.

A natural collab, in every sense

Cocotte occasional tables with tops adorned with cut-out leaves. Monstera and Lady Jane trivets named after the stylised plants that inspired the designer. There’s only one word to describe them: lush! This collab is all about bringing nature into the home, with appealing colours – Anthracite, Cedar Green, Red Ochre and Chili – that add a touch of warmth to your cosy space.

Plants, flowers and vegetation in general speak to the resplendent elegance of nature. There’s nothing more delicate than a leaf – a structure of infinite detail that’s open to endless interpretations

Mellemimijolie and Fermob: second nature!

Mellemimijolie’s creative identity is founded on the values that Fermob holds dear: colour, nature and joie de vivre. It was those qualities that brought her to our attention on Instagram.

My influences – colour, poetry and greenery – were a great fit with Fermob. We shared the same penchant for freshness and fun.

“It was inspiring to collaborate with a French brand that has solid green and eco-design credentials. I’d worked on designs for stationery, candles and textiles before, but this was my first foray into the world of furniture. The idea was to turn everyday objects into something different – with elegant, illustrated designs and custom patterns. My brief was to revisit the tops of the Cocotte tables using silkscreen-printed blocks of colour and to design eye-catching trivets for meals and get-togethers. Other than that, Fermob gave me complete creative freedom. It wasn’t your usual collab, though. It all happened under lockdown, so we never met in person. We worked from home, via our screens, with our children playing around us. It all went remarkably smoothly in the circumstances!”

If you share our passion for gentler interiors that reflect who you are and procure a sense of well-being – especially since we’re all spending more time at home right now – 😉then look no further than the Mellemimijolie limited-edition collection. Because when a collab produces something this good, it’d be a shame to miss out! And with Christmas just around the corner, these pieces are the ideal ready-made gifts.

I find inspiration all around me. I’ve been collecting postcards, and copies of Glamour and Vogue magazine, for years. And I’m a huge fan of sketchbooks and art books.

BALAD Lamp #FERMOBXKORALIE
Limited Edition

With its colourful metallic furniture, Fermob, an expert in joie de vivre in the garden, ushered in a new era when the brand launched its very first portable lamp on the outdoor market in 2015! Ah, the Balad! This new lamp already boasts an action-packed history; now, it’s time for a new chapter in the hands of Koralie, a talented visual artist! Read the story of a successful collaboration which will inevitably lead to more… Fermob’s talented community: take note! 😉

The Balad lamp: a stunning portable lamp

This small but revolutionary lamp caused quite a stir when it was launched. That’s not surprising! As the first portable lamp in Fermob’s history, it was designed to live outside and to go with you, wherever you are! Featuring innovative technology which creates whatever lighting you’re looking for (warm or cold, 100% or 50% for a softer, more subdued effect) and a curved design, it very quickly became a must-have, leading to the creation of a wide-ranging collection. How many family meals has it lit up on long summer evenings? How many picnics at the beach has it witnessed? How many secrets has it overhead in country meadows?

Fermob and art: an intense love story

Fermob has always loved working with creators who share the brand’s DNA. This year, the brand invited the artist Koralie to be part of a unique collaboration: combining the Balad’s design, created by the designer Tristan Lohner, with Koralie’s artistic world. When the brand contacted her, this artist was flattered. “We share the same values and the same mindset. Authenticity + French creation + the world of design = plenty of similarities between Fermob and me: a perfect match! ”

The Balad is an inspiring piece because it provides a vast area for expression with its sleek, simple design. Ideas for “adorning” the Balad lamp came almost naturally to me. I really liked its nomadic indoor/outdoor feel, the way it can be put down or hung and its timelessness.

Carte blanche for Koralie

As a brand which believes in nurturing talent, Fermob gave Koralie free rein when it came to creating 2 versions of the H25 Balad lamp. The artist explored two very different options: a colourful version, inspired by plants, and an Art Déco model with graphic monochrome patterns. A single step in the creation process: a moodboard to present Fermob with a few shapes, inspired by Koralie’s unique visual language.

An irresistible limited edition!

Our community was invited to choose between the two versions. Our Fermobpeople voted: they preferred the plant-inspired “Balad Vegetal” which resulted in a limited edition featuring a silkscreen print. “An incredible fan of phyllotaxis*”, Koralie decorated it with patterns inspired by the perfection of nature. The incredible sophistication of the plant order fascinates her: “I spend more time admiring Romanesco broccoli or a pineapple than I do cooking them!” she says.😉

I like the idea of the Balad’s different lighting settings; my favourite is the setting which recreates the temperature and the intensity of candlelight.

Well, this summer, the “Balad Vegetal” will create an intimate atmosphere (although that’s not all) on warm evenings for the happy few who snap up this limited edition. This lamp pays tribute to nature: we hope it has a bright future and that it’ll be copied over and over again. Thank you Koralie!

Portrait of a unique urban artist

From her beginnings in street art, as one of the only French women to create graffiti, to her move to the Basque coast to be closer to nature, Koralie’s career has also taken her to Paris and New York. The long periods she spent there inspired the shapes of her unique pictorial language: ethnic-inspired patterns from different countries (Koralie says she is a real fan of folklore and handicrafts), architectural elements (from her studies in this area) and animist rituals, both traditional and contemporary. She compiles all these elements into astonishing kaleidoscopic roses and multicultural palm trees.

Her style is also unique, because she mixes up the media and the materials she uses: paintings on canvas or murals (sometimes using stencils), wood sculptures and weaving, vector art, installations, videos and more. Her artwork is exceptionally elegant!

#FERMOBPEOPLE
Season 2 – Episode #4
Ocean Lovers
26 August 2019

Fermob’s Album shoot team headed to the west coast of France to meet a family of Ocean Lovers and members of the #FermobPeople community. Here, we catch up with one of the girls, Amy – a keen surfer and wine expert who’s always ready to share some of her unusual pairing tips. 😉

Tell us about the shoot…

It took place at our home in Cap Ferret. We’ve been coming to the peninsula for over 30 years. It was great fun! My mum’s an interior designer, so we really enjoyed talking about design and decoration with the team. We also like our food and drink, so I think we were very generous hosts!  The shoot itself felt really spontaneous and natural. I’ve done shoots on my own for other brands, but this time around we applied as a family – me, my sister and my mum. I have fond memories of the shoot.

How did you end up working as a wine expert?

As part of my master’s degree at INSEEC School of Communication, I did an internship on a wine estate. The experience really opened by eyes. I decided that was my calling – not surprising when you consider that my maternal grandparents have a home Bédoin, in the foothills of Mount Ventoux, nestled among the vines. Then I took a course at the Le Cordon Bleu school, set up Franck Ramoche, former head sommelier at Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. There were 19 of us on the course – people of all ages and from all walks of life. There was a cosmopolitan feel to it, with instructors from around the world. It was a whirlwind year – an invigorating and exciting experience to say the least! I spent time falling in love with France again, travelling the length and breadth of the country to learn about the history and features of different soils and regions. Then I took an internship at Pierre Gagnaire restaurant.

What took you to La Dame de Pic?

The course at Le Cordon Bleu was life-changing. It was the best thing that’s ever happened to me! My class supervisor was world-famous Argentinian sommelier Paz Levinson. At the graduation ceremony, she offered me a job as an assistant sommelier at La Dame de Pic, Anne-Sophie Pic’s Parisian restaurant. Working for the world’s most decorated chef is a real honour. I couldn’t have been happier. And I’m still just as happy today…

Can you recommend any food-and-wine pairings that are easy to enjoy at home?

There aren’t any special rules. It’s about savouring the experience. Let’s say you’re having Chinese food. Go to your local wine merchant and pick up a bottle of Loire or Sauternes – sweet and refreshing wines that will really compliment your food. A crisp, slightly chilled red will make the perfect partner for fish, since it’s delicate in the mouth. If you’ve got more to spend, go for the complexity of Champagne. It adds sparkle to any meal, and it goes great with any dish.

You don’t have to choose a particular name or estate to find a wine you love. Just go with what takes your fancy at the time. You’ll find a winner through a process of trial and error!

What are your favourite places to grab a glass of wine in Paris and Cap Ferret?

  • My favourite place in Cap Ferret is Vintage Ferret, a bar and wine cellar on Boulevard de la Plage. They stock some really interesting Bordeaux, and the atmosphere is very laid-back.
  • In Paris, where I live and work, my top picks are Barav (6 Rue Charles-François Dupuis, 75003, Paris) and O Château (68 Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 75001, Paris), where they hold blind tasting sessions.
  • I also like La Cave du Septime on 3 Rue Basfroi in the 11th arrondissement, not least for the atmosphere!

Saison 2 – Episode #3
Into the Wild
Interview Aurélie et Joachim

Let’s set the scene… A remote hut in the wilderness of Manosque, between Lubéron and Verdon Gorge, where Aurélie and Joachim grow olives and cultivate joie de vivre. A pair of generous food-lovers who enjoy nothing more than family get-togethers around the dinner table. They invited the 2020 Album shoot team into their home – and into their world where flavour reigns supreme.

How did the shoot go?

I think it’ll go down in history as the hottest Fermob shoot on record. At one point, the mercury hit 47°C! It was the flowering season, and the olives were practically cooking on the trees. The team had to shoot outside early in the morning and late at night to avoid the worst of the heat. Shooting in full daylight was difficult because it was so hot. And our make-up kept running off our faces, which made things even harder! We love cooking, but we had to settle for pretty basic, uncomplicated food such as fresh fruit and vegetables drizzled with olive oil.

You invited the team into your hut. Can you tell us what it means to you?

We’re originally from Haute-Provence. After spending some time living in Brazil and Paris, we couldn’t resist the call of the south so we bought this hut in an olive grove. It’s our bolt-hole from the hustle and bustle of city life (Aurélie and Joachim live in Marseille during the week). Here, we can reconnect with nature and put things into perspective. You can’t help but feel humble when you stand before a hundred-year-old tree!

Aurélie, what appeals to you about growing olives?

Olives have always been a part of my life, for as long as I can remember. We feel a real affinity for this region, and they’re part of the local DNA. Every family in and around Manosque has their own small olive grove. For me, harvesting the olives and making olive oil is very much akin to what Fermob does:  perpetuating time-served knowledge and taking pride in a job well done. It’s also a chance for us to step back from our busy lives and focus our minds on something else. And there’s nothing better than enjoying the fruits of your own labour!

Tell us about Aurélie and Joachim’s olive grove…

Our oil has a distinctive flavour of artichokes. It’s more flavourful and keeps for longer than older-type oils made with very dark and less powerful olives. Our 200 trees produce up to 300 litres of oil in a good year, but we only managed 30 litres last year because of the heatwave. Our output depends very much on the climate and the weather! We sell our oil locally, and we give a lot of it away too.

Can you give us some insights into your passion for cooking?

Good food and hospitality have been part of my life since childhood. My grandmother grew and prepared her own food. So for me, cooking brings back fond memories. My husband has learned how to cook too, and we work as a team. We’re both versatile and bring complementary skills to the table. Everything we eat is home-made, from praline pastries to tapenades and focaccia (see below or enclosed for Aurélie’s secret recipes!).

Hosting is synonymous with connecting and sharing special moments with people. The more the merrier!
Cooking is about getting the right ingredients in the right balance!

Did you know? Small-scale producers like Aurélie and Joachim account for 80% of French olive oil. And, according to Aurélie, consumers like you and I have a role to play in maintaining high standards. We are one of the links in the chain.

#FERMOBPEOPLE
Season 2 – Episode #2
I am a Princess
Bertrand and Séverine

Listen the “I am a Princess” playlist

Château de Craon, nicknamed the “little Versailles of the Mayenne”, is home to Bertrand, Sévérine and their five children aged 5 to 13 years. This happy young family are all members of the Fermobpeople community, just like you. But with one difference: they live on an 18th-century estate inherited from Bertrand’s grandfather! When we paid them a visit for a photo shoot, it was like stepping back in time. Welcome to the Kingdom of Craon…

Hello Bertrand,
Thank you for welcoming us into your home. What made you want to take part in our Album shoot?

We love Fermob and we already owned some pieces. My wife Sévérine was looking for some outdoor furniture for our self-catering properties and she saw the casting call advert on the Fermob website. As for me, I’d always wanted to see what goes on behind the camera. The logistics side of things was fascinating! The kids had great fun getting their make-up done and acting the part.

Can you tell us a funny story about the shoot?

To be honest, it almost never happened! The train was cancelled, and when the team went to collect the hire car in Angers, it was no longer available. I had to jump in my big car and go and pick them up! The shoot itself was a great experience. The Fermob team stayed in our guest rooms and we ate together.

What does this château mean to you?

It takes a lot of time and energy! But it means a lot to us as a family. My father was born here, and I grew up here with my five brothers and sisters. I inherited it in 2018, but it could just as easily have gone to any of my siblings. It holds a special place in all our hearts. My parents were keen proponents of family unity and values. They started the guest room business and they still help us out by running the occasional guided tour. My father picks fruit from our kitchen garden and makes all the jams and preserves we serve our guests for breakfast.

Séverine, what does it take to run a place like this?

A level head and plenty of patience. You have to be able to act quickly in an emergency, but you can’t rush into things. It’s important to be sensitive to the history of the place and do everything to a high standard. This is our legacy to future generations, after all.

How do you go about modernising a château?

We can’t alter the listed parts of the building and the grounds. But, like the generations before us, we’ve added a modern touch to the place with sculptures, paintings and other artworks. We’ve also cut back and reshaped the tress and planted some species that weren’t here 300 years ago. Oh, and we’ve installed some Fermob furniture in the garden, of course! With the self-catering properties, there’s much more creative freedom.

Running a château must have its ups and downs…

I never get tired of opening the shutters and looking out over the grounds in the morning. It’s so peaceful. And I love bringing up my children in the countryside, in an environment like this. Of course, there are times when we’d rather have the place all to ourselves. But we enjoy sharing this magical setting with our guests. Here we are, in this little corner of France, yet we get to meet people from all over the world. Sometimes we even have celebrities staying with us. The children get very excited!

What’s your relationship with colour?

Our château was built in the 18th century, which was an extremely colourful period of history. When we’re doing renovation work, I sometimes end up arguing with the builders about adding some splashes of colour here and there rather than sticking to shades of blue, grey and white. I often turn to the Farrow & Ball colour chart for inspiration. I love the natural, pigmented tones. I’ve learned about the history of the château and the 18th century more generally. I also look at what’s happening at Versailles for fabric and colour ideas. This place is modelled on Versailles, after all. I have a special affinity for colour. I enjoy painting in my studio tucked away in the attic.

How to you go about injecting life into the château and its grounds?

People who spend a night in our guest rooms are staying in a living, breathing house. That’s the mindset we adopt when we welcome guests and visitors into our home! We’re also keen to open up the building to the public and show people what life was like in the 18th century. We have a team of four staff who help us organise weddings and concerts, and we use the income from those events to maintain the building and grounds.

We knew what we were signing up for! And we’re determined to honour our promise to bring Château de Craon and its grounds to life.

Good reasons to visit Château de Craon:

  • Visit a historic monument with original 18th-century features, including a wash house, a cold store (the precursor to the fridge) and a dovecote.
  • Stay in a guest room or self-catering property and experience château living.
  • Take a stroll around the listed 116-acre grounds. Take your pick from the landscaped garden, the formal garden, the kitchen garden… or all three! Each one is as impressive as the next.
  • Explore almost 4 miles of alleys and discover idyllic romantic spots, or come face-to-face with deer along one of the many paths.
  • Sample the incredible home-made jams and preserves made with fruit picked from the kitchen garden by Bertrand’s father, Loïc de Guébriant.
  • And if love is in the air, you can even get married in the former stables!

#FERMOBPEOPLE
Season 2 – Episode #1
New-York City
Interview Tom Watson

We gave our favourite American photographer, Tom Watson, a free hand in his home town of NYC. His signature photos? Snaps full of movement and cheerfulness (just like Fermob‘s universe!). We followed him in the rain to his favourite spots, holding a Luxembourg chair in his hand. Meeting real people: Fermobpeople, like you, snapped on the go… And it worked!

Hello Tom,
You usually photograph professional models, so what was this shoot in NYC like? What do you remember about it?

It was fantastic! Doing a street casting was a real challenge for me. I was terrified! And at the same time, it was exciting to enter someone’s world uninvited… Surprisingly, there was an immediate feeling of trust. Maybe because neither of us had any particular expectations? Maybe the models also sensed my own vulnerability and shyness? Whatever; something definitely happened during the brief time we spent together!

Is it the New York that you love that we can see in this photo shoot?

Yes, definitely 😉  For years I’ve been tirelessly shooting Chinatown at night and subway stations. These pictures look just like my everyday life! For the shoot, we strode through New York and put the Luxembourg chair in iconic places, such as the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge. Passers-by sat down, to have a rest or take selfies… Everyone was smiling, and then I realized that Luxembourg was a real magnet. For a whole minute it was as though time had stood still for these passers-by – attracted by this chair – and for us too!

This photo shoot was like sneaking into your secret garden, because you were shooting some of your favourite places. It reveals your tastes… Would it be too much to ask you to tell us some of your favourite addresses in NYC?

There’s a ferry sailing the East River from Wall Street to Astoria. Along the way, you can get off at several points along the Brooklyn and Queens waterfront. The terminus, Astoria, is close to the Noguchi Museum. It’s a real jewel, dedicated to the Japanese architect. You can also hop on a bike to ride along the East River from Williamsburg to Long Island City.

I walk around NYC a lot and when I get a bit peckish I stop at the Whole Foods Market: you can be sure there’ll be plenty of healthy food and variety. One of my favourites is in Union Square Park on 14th Street. From up there, the view of the surroundings is amazing!

Colour or black & white?

Colour, since digital photography has replaced film!

Are you more into portraits or landscapes?

Despite my shyness, I like to photograph people. And I like cityscapes. Especially at night.  What’s the most beautiful cityscape for me? No hesitation: Tokyo!

For a beginner photographer, what would you advise: take photos with your phone or get a camera? If so, which one?

Today’s smartphones are great recording tools. They are packed full of technologies and they give instant access to social networks. I always carry one with me! However, I find that a traditional camera is much better for anyone who wants to learn the basics of photography. When I’m not working on a professional project, I use the Panasonic Lumix LX 100. It gives me instant access to all the basic settings and is small enough to for me to take it everywhere. It’s reasonably priced and gives very respectable results.

Any final thoughts?

When people ask me what I do for a living, I say that I’m a fashion and advertising photographer. Is that the truth? I’m a photographer: that’s enough! I mean, not just your average photographer… I have to tell you a very personal story. When I was six, I had an accident with a banger and lost side vision in my left eye. As a result, I can see exactly what a camera sees: I have monocular vision. I made it into a strength! Perhaps my success is partly due to that?

In Paris, apart from the Eiffel Tower (which you can see from your apartment), and which is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for you, what other places do you like to shoot?

The oldest districts of Paris inspire me. I also love Montmartre’s cobblestone streets and rooftops and the social mix to be found in Belleville. Paris is at its most beautiful at night. Not surprising that it’s called the “city of lights”! I like to discover the hidden beauty resulting from the random interplay between light and shadow, colour and form, past and present.

It’s difficult to make something new, something unusual, from such an over-photographed, iconic place, but I sometimes manage to do it 😉

Passionate about rallying! https://www.fermobpeople.com/en/passionate-about-rallying/ https://www.fermobpeople.com/en/passionate-about-rallying/#respond Wed, 12 Feb 2020 11:23:11 +0000 https://www.fermobpeople.com/?p=9320

Here, we talk to two women with a surprising pastime: Armelle Ferrieux, International Sales Director at Fermob, and Hélène Grand’Eury, drama teacher and director of a children’s choir. Together they make up Team Roses 38, a rallying team that finished an impressive 13th place in the Rallye des Pionniers, between Oujda and Fes in Morocco, on 13-19 October 2019. Is it their strong personalities, and the obvious bond between them, that makes them so successful?

Why do you think your partnership works so well?

Armelle: “We complement each other, almost to the point of being complete opposites. Hélène, the driver, is a high-energy, spur-of-the-moment kind of person. As the navigator, I’m more thoughtful and considered in my approach. There’s a real alchemy between us. We also share the same values, and we’re great friends. We spend a lot of time laughing.”

Hélène: “We’re adventurous types who love having fun and letting our hair down. For both of us, an adventure is the perfect way to switch off from everyday life.”

What has rallying taught you?

Hélène:  “Stepping out of your comfort zone is a great way to discover who you really are!”

Armelle: “Rallying is an incredible learning experience. You learn how to make decisions as a pair, and you understand why detail is so important. As the saying goes, the devil is in the detail!”

What personal qualities do you need to be part of a rallying team?

“A strong mind”
“Having a strong mind matters more than being in good physical shape,” says Armelle (although she still runs twice a week, skis in winter and cycles in summer).

“A love of challenge”
Armelle is no stranger to targets at work. She adopts that same approach to her personal life, too. In 2012, the year she turned 40, she set her sights on taking part in the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles, a women-only rally in Morocco. Hélène, who won the event in 2018, sets herself a new challenge every year. Her goal for 2020? To take part in the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles for the 10th time – and achieve another podium finish!

 “A willingness to push yourself”
Rallying is about stepping outside your comfort zone, dealing with difficulty and pushing yourself to succeed.

“An ability to connect”
You need to develop an almost symbiotic relationship with your team-mate: one picks up the slack from the other.

“A deep understanding of yourself”
It’s no surprise that most participants are over the age of 45.

And, of course:

“Trust in your partner” and “A willingness to question yourself”

Their favourite number?

13: the position they finished in both the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles and the Rallye des Pionniers!

Their mantra?

“It’ll all work out in the end!” For Hélène, the phrase has “mystical” properties. “We all do things that are useful and reasonable,” says Armelle. “But it’s rare that you get to live your dreams.”

The Rallye des Pionniers: the Paris-Dakar Rally in miniatur

At a glance:

A cross-country rally, in which participants have to cross the finish line within an allotted time.
7 days, 6 stages along the route of the former Paris-Dakar Rally
Classic cars in the mix: Team Roses 38 raced in the same model as Jutta Kleinschmidt drove when she became the first women to win the Paris-Dakar rally in 2001. They spent 9 hours stickering up the car under the heat of the sun! Not for the faint-hearted!
A course measuring close to 2,500 km
50 teams on the starting line: 40 cars and 10 motorcycles

Plus…

A strong sense of community and mutual support among participants.
Fascinating encounters with local people (who helped Hélène and Armelle change a flat tyre and served them mint tea).
Ever-changing scenery: streams, tracks, oases and more. “Stunning!”

Eric Brun-Sanglard : When feeling makes colour https://www.fermobpeople.com/en/eric-brun-sanglard-when-feeling-markes-colour/ https://www.fermobpeople.com/en/eric-brun-sanglard-when-feeling-markes-colour/#respond Wed, 22 Jan 2020 08:46:54 +0000 https://www.fermobpeople.com/?p=9178

This is the story of a man who has always had a taste for colour. A man whose heart and mind was always set racing by “burnt orange” (the Hermès one) and indigo blue. In both the figurative and the literal sense… A man with a crazy amount of talent, who knows how to blend colours as few are able to do, and create harmonies such that people feel good in the interiors he designs for them. An inspiring testimonial on colour!

This man is Eric Brun-Sanglard

The great colour specialist, Eric Brun-Sanglard, cannot see! It was suddenly going blind that confirmed his gift for being able to feel colours. “But how can he imagine them? How did he become aware of this special sensitivity?” All these questions can be summed up in one: “How does he manage to decorate interiors, without being able to even glimpse the colours that are the basis of his art?”

“Close your eyes to see better”

…that’s Eric Brun-Sanglard’s answer! To get beyond the preconceived ideas that sight encloses us in, this is, he believes, the only solution! Colour should be tasted blindly, like cooking. Forget your set ideas and categorical judgements… Sight limits us to a narrow world and, by losing it, Eric Brun-Sanglard has freed himself from it. So he says: “I was almost relieved when I went blind, because I was able to attain a kind of authenticity that had been hiding behind sight.”

What was his revelation? Colour provides sensations…

When he went blind from one day to the next, Eric Brun-Sanglard consulted a Chinese doctor who put plants in the palm of his hands to help him get better. He noticed that some gave him strength, while others did not. Hence his idea of transposing this way of working to the world of colours: “test” them, by touching them, and then “calibrate” them in order to create your own inner colour chart. Depending on what he felt when he came into contact with them – vibrations, hot or cold sensations – he was able to recompose a broad palette in his head. “I simply escaped from the visual world to a world of the senses”, he says. Since then, Eric Brun-Sanglard chooses colours for his customers’ interiors that bring them well-being and emotional security… While each person’s feeling about colours is as personal as his perception is, he also feels what others need.

“Look at it differently!”

That’s the watchword of this colour specialist! Eric Brun-Sanglard invites us to take a fresh look at everything around us. To experience the fact that colours are vitamins, which can sometimes have a positive impact on us. But “seeing things differently” is far more than that! “Each morning we can choose to wake up with the glass half empty or half full”, says Eric Brun-Sanglard. Coming from a man who went blind at the early age of 33, this is a powerful reminder! He adds: “My life is no longer my own: I am called on to witness, inspire and drive people to face their fears and surpass themselves”. This is why he has been travelling the world for years, sharing his experience in an honest, authentic and unabashed manner. “Everybody gets something from it, because each of us has a handicap!” he concludes. A lack of self-esteem, or a complex…

If you like colours, now’s the time to rediscover them: with your eyes closed, note the ones that do you good, and give you good vibes… And if you don’t feel good inside, it may be a question of colours!

”reconstruire

“Rebuilding your inner house”

This is the title of Eric Brun-Sanglard’s next book, which will be published on January 23rd by Cherche-Midi. As outdoor furniture specialists, who also invest in your interior, we wanted to find out more about this.

“It is a book at the crossroads of decoration and personal development. Our house reveals so much about us… We even talk about the mirror effect of our environment! As the saying goes: show me your interior and I’ll tell you who you are… My second book, after Au-delà de ma nuit : témoignage d’un designer aveugle (Going beyond darkness: the testimony of a blind designer), looks at this link between environment and self-expression. And how you can improve your life by making your home more beautiful”.

Some secrets we picked up during this fascinating interview

What are your sources of inspiration?

My many travels, which I learn a lot from.

What’s your next getaway?

Sri Lanka and India this winter. I like to get away at this time of year!

And yet, ironically, Eric Brun-Sanglard is from Chamonix in the French Alps. But he prefers wide horizons, the sea, and the smells of heat, like those of California, which he loves so much, to the mountains, which he finds oppressive.

What’s your favourite colour in the Fermob colour chart?

I really like your Cactus, and I love your Capucine and Acapulco Blue!

What’s your favourite Fermob material?

I prefer textured metal, which I like the soft, grainy feel of, to the other, which is colder.

A Jésus Sauvage and Fermob collab? Oh. My. God! https://www.fermobpeople.com/en/a-jesus-sauvage-and-fermob-collab-oh-my-god/ https://www.fermobpeople.com/en/a-jesus-sauvage-and-fermob-collab-oh-my-god/#respond Mon, 20 May 2019 10:38:51 +0000 https://www.fermobpeople.com/?p=8086

“For me, Fermob is all about furniture that’s inspired by people – furniture you can live with for life.”

Here at Fermob, we pour unbridled joie de vivre into each and every one of our collections, and even into our catalogues. So you might say we’ve found our alter ego! Jésus Sauvage – an influencer and image-maker, in case you haven’t heard of her – and is one of our behind-the-scenes #FERMOBPEOPLE. She helped us put together our interior design catalogue, showcasing our lamps and accessories. And, you have to admit, our furniture looks as happy as Larry.

Here we take an in-depth look at our incredible partnership with a talented lady – and an intriguing personality.

Enjoying outdoor

Jésus Sauvage adorns outdoor spaces and rips up the rulebook with Fermob furniture. She’s a talented young woman with a keen eye for colour and a provocative, quirky style – always executed with the utmost elegance. We spent two days in her garden – a heady mixture of crazy, off-beat, inspired yet understated creativity and a dash of professionalism – for a photo shoot and plenty of laughs to boot.

But before we go any further, let’s answer the question that everyone’s asking: where did she get her name? If you ask Sandra (her real name) where “Jésus Sauvage” came from, she’ll tell you she was also known as “Jésus” at home when she was young. “Sauvage”, meanwhile, is French for “wild” – which also happens to be the name of her husband’s company. Now we’ve got that out of the way, let’s dig into the detail.

Set design… What ?

So what does Jésus Sauvage actually do? Well we asked her, and here’s what she said: “I stage objects, match colours, design sets that tell a story. Sometimes I go for a realistic look. Other times, I let my creativity run free. It’s exciting work. Nothing ever stays the same.

Image maker. Child’s play?

What’s the best thing about her job? “I get to have fun. I live in a multifaceted world filled with colour, craziness and children’s laughter.

What’s inspiring her right now? Everything to do with children, especially little ones. “There’s so much freedom and possibility in interior design for kids. It’s all so fresh, so colourful, so vibrant. And it’s so much fun. I’m trying to carry a bit of that magic over into the grown-up world.” Her interest in children comes as no surprise, given that she has her own merry band of three boys, with the youngest exactly two years old.

What side of her work does she enjoy the most? “Set design.” She lets us into a little secret: when there’s a photographer behind the lens, she’ll happily leave them to do the camera work and focus on her side of things – on setting the scene.

But we had another question: what’s the secret to making a great image? “There’s no rulebook, no magic recipe for designing a successful set,” she says. “The trick is to keep things as natural as possible. That way, you won’t go far wrong.

Femob and Jésus Sauvage: a match made in heaven!

She’s so effusive about Fermob furniture that it’s almost enough to make us blush. When someone with an expert eye is so complimentary about you, it’s worth shouting about. But one thing’s for sure: we’re lucky to have found each other.

For me, Fermob is all about furniture that’s inspired by people – furniture you can live with for life. It might be discreet, but it’s always useful and practical. I’m a big fan of understated, visually striking, timeless design. My tastes are shifting in that direction. These are pieces you’ll want to keep with you for many years to come. Not just because of their quality, but because they’re a mix of genres, materials and colours. It works wonders.

What’s her favourite piece from the collection? She stops to think for a moment (naturally!) but settles on the lamps. “They’re useful, practical, and really cleverly designed.” As for her favourite colour, “it has to be the new Acapulco Blue” (no surprise there either, since it’s as bright as her ideas).

What I really love about Fermob is the sheer variety of colours,” she adds. “The creative possibilities are limitless.” We couldn’t agree more. Here’s hoping we’ll have many more inspired moments (and successful collaborations) with Jésus Sauvage – in another place, at another time, behind the scenes or front of stage. All that remains is to thank her for being such a great host – and for her expert eye and her own unbridled joie de vivre.
